ADVANCE helped small enterprises in Tamale improve resource stewardship, translating waste, water and energy concerns into practical operating routines and supplier responsibilities.
The challenge
Participating businesses recognised rising pressure on water, energy and waste handling but lacked simple records showing where operational changes were possible. Disposal practices depended on available local services, and generic sustainability advice rarely reflected working conditions. Owners needed to distinguish affordable housekeeping improvements from investments requiring technical assessment. The programme also had to avoid presenting unmeasured environmental benefits as verified reductions in emissions or resource consumption.
Our approach
ADVANCE conducted practical operating reviews with enterprise owners, documenting resource uses, waste streams and available collection arrangements. Participants introduced basic observation logs and selected manageable actions such as leak reporting, equipment shutdown routines and separation of suitable materials. Local service providers clarified collection conditions and responsibilities. Where equipment changes were proposed, the team recommended qualified technical assessment and lifecycle cost review rather than prescribing unsupported performance claims.
The result
Enterprises adopted resource management routines that fitted their operating environments and identified where better records were still needed. Owners could discuss waste collection and equipment maintenance with clearer expectations of service providers. The programme produced practical action plans and a foundation for later measurement, not a claim of independently verified environmental savings. Sustainability became an operational responsibility connected to daily decisions rather than a separate communications exercise.
