ADVISE developed a cold chain venture model for Conakry, testing customer needs, operating responsibilities and service economics before the founders committed to expansion.

The challenge

The founders had identified losses associated with unreliable cold storage but had not settled on a service model. Fish traders, food distributors and institutional buyers required different handling standards, collection arrangements and payment terms. Equipment ownership alone would not resolve power reliability or customer accountability. The venture needed to determine which customer problem it could serve consistently before choosing facilities, vehicles or a broad geographic footprint.

Our approach

ADVISE tested customer use cases through interviews and operating scenario workshops, distinguishing storage rental from managed handling and distribution services. The team mapped product movement, temperature control responsibilities, power contingencies and claims procedures. A venture model linked service packages to staffing, equipment and working capital requirements. The founders received a pilot plan with customer qualification criteria, operating records and decision points for refining the offer before expansion.

The result

The venture emerged with a defined initial customer focus and a service proposition grounded in operational responsibilities. The founders could evaluate equipment choices against intended usage rather than procurement availability alone. Pilot materials established how customer acceptance, handling incidents and payment behaviour would be recorded. This created a practical basis for testing the business while keeping expansion conditional on service reliability and demonstrable commercial demand.

Outcomes

  • Defined cold chain service model
  • Customer-qualified pilot design
  • Operationally grounded venture economics
